Margaux Fried and Katie Marlowe Exhibit Opening: Saturday the 11th from 6 to 10 p.m.

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

The next Mew Gallery exhibit starts this weekend! A little write up about the art can be found below.
The reception is Saturday, the 11th, from 6 to 10 p.m. There will be drinks, hors deourvres, and live
music.

We would love to see you at this event! Please come to support Katie, Margaux, and Mew Gallery.

Margaux Fried and Katie Marlowe met some time ago
through a dirty shoppe window, each
having observed in the other, something familiar.
Through letters and conversations, they
quickly uncovered their shared love for classic
literature, vintage clothing, olde photographs et
al…anything with a past.

They soon joined efforts. Their passion for
photography and adventure led to investigation of
abandoned houses, abandoned lives.

Although they often work together, separating their
work is not difficult. After exiting (or
escaping) an abandoned house, the booty is then
split
up, pirate-style: For Margaux, the
decaying filthy traces of what was. For Katie, the
prettier things to make what is.
In Margaux’s photographs, bits mysteriously gather,
and Margaux steps into the spectacle,
adorned in her ill-gotten gains. A mispaced
Raskolnikov. Stories rise from the dust and swirl
into the future.

Conversely, Katie creates lush scenes of whimsical
women and merriment in 18th century
gardens , but with a self-awareness that asserts the
birthright of dreamers and readers across
the time continuum. (Think: Southern Gothic Emily
Bronte.)

The general medium is photography, but both artists
add to the images, using found objects,
paints, clippings, words, or stains, all combined
within the boundaries of antique frames.
It could be said that without one, the other’s work
would not be complete, as demonstrated in a
recent phone call. “There is another dead bird in my
yard, do you want me to keep it for you?”
