Take the Handmade Pledge
and purchase holiday gifts at the Philly Etsy Trunkshow
December 7, 2007 from 6:30 to 9 pm

We’ll be hosting a group of local Etsy sellers and their wares in the first monthly Philadelphia Etsy Trunk Show! So avoid the crowds of First Friday in Olde City and come see some art and carfts in the Italian Market.

Etsy is an online marketplace for buying & selling all things handmade. If you’re not already addicted, you soon will be by checking out ETSY.COM

Local Etsy sellers are joining forces and have created the Philadelphia Street Team. Meetings are here at Mew Gallery every third Friday of every month. Do you sell on Etsy too? Local to Philly? Get involved! This is the lady who runs it: GIRLS CAN TELL SHOP

So far thousands of people have pledged to buy handmade goods in an effort to support independent artists and crafters. Pledge to do so yourself at BUYHANDMADE.ORG

Also - for all you Project Runway fans out there or fans of cool stuff in general: Philly’s own Jay McCarroll is selling awesome bowling bags, totes, and wrist cuffs here at Mew Gallery! We’ll upload images on the webshop by the end of the week. He’s also designing some exclusive handmade tees and totes in his signature patchwork that we should get in a few weeks. Interested? Keep checking back. We’ll be doing weekly updates to the blog and shop!

There can’t be more. Is there more? YES!!
Our next gallery exhibit is being curated by Mike Geno. It’s awesome and it’s all about sock monkeys!! The opening reception is December 15 from 5 to 9. Join us in the fun! It’s the perfect show for the holiday season! Stay tuned for more details.

“The two of us have been planning this show for almost a year. Maybe we’ll never finish. The process of brainstorming threw out lots of ideas, and we ran with more than one before scrapping them all and starting over. Capillaries. Intersections. Underwater Cities. Overlooked [Beauty]. Inbetweens. Nature in the Unnatural. Public Transit. House vs. Home. We wanted to show all of those things. They are part of us. They touch us. They surround us. What we realized though, was that through all of our titles and motifs there was one underlying theme that always persisted; connections. Connections between people, places, times. Ties that bind, the things that remember, tell a story, stretch, pull together, repair. Tape is ubiquitous. Tape is the unremarkable common ground between plumbers and artists. Mechanics and housewives. A shoe and a tent. A television remote and a window frame. Tape is a bandage. A shield against leaks. The immediate solution to hold during greater healing. To us, tape is a way forward. It is the initial stick when people meet. The uncanny event of coincidence. The in between of two parts connecting, random or of the same substance. It is an appreciation of the remarkable-ordinary-everyday”. -Jonathan Hafer & Alyssa Grenning 2007
About Alyssa Grenning

Houses and creatures atop a vast yellow sea, Alyssa Grenning unravelsa story of curious struggle. Layers of glue and tape, in relation to the show’s title, speak of healing and the piecing together lost parts. Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, Alyssa’s work deals with the importance and placement of home, communication, and heart.

About Jonathan Hafer “I live in West Philly, have a raging case of wanderlust, am mildly insomnaical, and I can’t remember the last time I really got angry. I’m fascinated by mass transit, libraries, and other sorts of mundane things that are actually amazing human achievements. In addition to being a freelance artist/illustrator/graphic designer, I’m a musician in the Philly based experimental rock band ‘The March Hare’ <http://www.themarchharemusic.com/> . I have a design day job, and I do other things too, but usually I think about music or art while doing them”.
