Press and Compound Warehaus Show

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

The new J.L. Schnabel exhibit is even better than we imagined! You don’t have to take my word for it though. Check out this review in Philly’s Metro newspaper. Some well-deserved press for Jess! many thanks to Doug Wallen for writing it up!

In other news: this Friday is the first show at Compound Warehaus. The show is called “The Shape We’re In”. It’s all art based on Philly’s skyline. Check out some local art about our fair city. Also, if you see a postcard for this show around town, keep it as a collector’s item! They’re all hand printed by artist Erin Broadhurst using a linoleum block carving technique.

Fleisher Art Memorial

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

It’s way too yucky out for me to be awake. Yet I am. I am awake and extra tired from  spending the morning teaching a Dream House Workshop at Fleisher Art Memorial

Fleisher has been around for about 100 years, right up there on Catharine Street (a couple of blocks away from us), offering art classes to children and adults for free. I’ve spent the last 7 or 8 years there, teaching Saturday morning children’s classes and a couple of summer workshops. Carolynne teaches there too. This past year I also became involved in their Community Partnership in the Arts program, where I was sent to do projects with kids in local schools. I love Fleisher and plan to be married in the beautiful sanctuary there, this coming Halloween.

If you haven’t heard of Fleisher, or have yet to check it out, please do visit! It’s yet another reason why this neighborhood is the best place on Earth.

Mlog? blogmew? mewblog? Mewlog?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

We’re still working on the clever pun…

But we wanted you to know that since this website is set up like a blog, we’re gonna treat it as one.  We’ll continue to post about our upcoming shows, events, and special stuff as usual.  We’ve decided, though, that this blog needs to be a BLOG.  Stay tuned for frequent posts about local happenings, general news and events, the trials and tribulations of running a small  arts-based business, and  just general  daily goings on here.  We have some pretty funny stories to share and figured we’d share it all with you, the magical internet.  Because, why the heck not?

The Heart is a Dagger Above All Else is a collection of haunting new portraits by J.L. Schnabel. These new works showcase a departure from the artist’s usually bright, candy colored palate to one that is more dark and muted, with the addition of metallic colors such as gold and gunmetal. This new palate highlights the articulated faces of women who appear more three dimensional than in her past work. Also is the introduction of patterned papers and other collage elements, inspired from the Victorian notion of ‘Horror Vacui’ ( a psychological fear of empty space that results in the filling of an entire surface with ornamental patterns and designs), and the surrealist collage work of Max Ernst.

The women in these new portraits reveal the dark side of the feminine heart, they appear on the razor edge of madness, deviant seduction and blood lust. Many of the portraits are of historical women whom society has deemed ‘femmes fatales’; women whose charms lure her lovers into various dangers and certain death. Her ability to seduce and hypnotize her victims is attributed to supernatural powers, which are rooted in mythology, such as vampires, sirens, succubae, witches and other “evil” creatures. They appear in dark room corners, as well is in the radiance of divine light, showing the paradoxical duality of what is considered “good” and what is considered “evil.” By combining the past lives of historical women with fantastical creatures, they appear as contemporary reminders of the close links between the “real” world and the supernatural through the gazes of the feminine heart and its vast capabilities for darkness and mystery.

J.L. Schnabel is a Philadelphia based painter and writer. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from The New School in N.Y.C. Aside from painting and writing, she also assembles jewelry from ‘found’ vintage objects for her Blood Milk line. During opening night, a special series of new jewelry: ‘femmes fatales’ will be available. Some of the pieces directly correspond to the portraits and most of them include ‘wearable weapons’ such as concealed pocket knives. For more, please visit www.bloodmilk.etsy.com.
