whether you’ve come to one (or many) of our gallery openings, etsy events, workshops, or just popped your head in while waiting in line at Sabrina’s Cafe or the Italian Market, and you want to help us out, or if you really just like the idea of what we’re trying to do here (supporting the LOCAL arts and giving the community a place to come for accessible, socially responsible and truly special one of a kind gifts) we really can’t express how appreciative of your support we are.

if you haven’t already, if you could find a moment of your time, please go to:

Gas: written in 1918 by Georg Kaiser
Directed by: Thomas Choinacky, performed by Anthology Project

“I have seen man - I must protect him against himself.” Exploring the hauntingly modern implications of a century old piece, we discover the gas driving society is poisonous. The fight to preserve our way of life or change the world’s energy source is the dividing question in this innovative production.

please check out some of the other Philly Fringe Fest events too!

The realities of being a “small” business

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

So, really, it’s just Carolynne and I that run this place. We do, however, have a few trusted people who help us by taking on weekend shifts here and there. We really, really, really appreciate them. A lot. We also can’t have too many cooks in the kitchen; so the family of Mew Gallery helpers is tiny. It’s just a couple of people we know we can rely on to run the shop smoothly while we are not here.

Unfortunately, our tiny family of trusted helpers is really busy this weekend. Also unfortunately, Carolynne is throwing me a shower tomorrow (obviously not a surprise and yay! thanks Carolynne!!). So, duh, neither of us can be here!

Luckily for us, we have this great intern now. His name is Jaime and he is a student at Art Institute. He usually comes in and helps out with marketing stuff, web things, and general this and that. He’s great! And trustworthy! So guess who’s been added to the family of store helpers?!?! Jaime! And his girlfriend Cecilia! Yay!! they will be running the store tomorrow from 10 until 4. Totally trustworthy. And they’re big lifesavers.

What is the point of this post? I don’t know… Just making conversation. Also want to let you know that we may not be open until 7:30 tomorrow. We may only be open until 4, when Jaime and Cecilia have to leave to babysit. So get your shopping on early, boys and girls!! Make a plan to go out to brunch at Sabrina’s, grab a coffee at Gleaner’s, and march your butt into Mew to check out our new stuff before 4. Please make sure to say hi to Jaime and Cecilia for me! and “Thanks!”

P.S. Please vote for us on MyFox Philly’s Hotlist: Click here to vote
You might have to go through a slightly annoying 1 minute login process but please do vote for us!!

P.P.S. We also have another intern named Valerie and we LOVE her. She’s a student at Art Institute too and is in a couple of the classes I teach. But I seem to recall Valerie saying something about being busy this weekend. So Valerie will get her own post one day about how much we love her. Because, really, we LOVE her!! Valerie is awesome!! Can you tell I felt guilty writing a post of praise to Jaime? How could I not talk about our other intern, Val. as well!!??

P.P.S.S. We love interns!! Wanna intern too? Write us at mewgallery(at)yahoo(dot)com!

Television is fun!

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Hello everyone! I went on tv and I didn’t die or throw up from nerves (believe me, I got close!). I haven’t seen the tape yet though so it may still be pretty embarrassing…

The people at the 10! show are super nice. If you have a minute, check us out later online. I think they’ll be posting scenes from the show. You can also check it out on OnDemand

I want to say thank you to our artists and designers for letting us show their work.
I also want to say thank you to our models, Ashley, Rachquel, and Phylicia who got up pretty darn early for us today.

People who saw the show and are interested in the styles we featured: stay tuned! we’ll be uploading them into our webshop this week. You can also come in to the shop and see what else we have to offer. Again, the trends here at Mew Gallery are about finding one-of-a-kind and affordable pieces to really make you stand out. The styles featured on tv were just a really small selection of all the wonderful hand-crafted items we have here at 906 Christian Street!

Music! Swimming! Art & our Skyline!

Friday, August 1st, 2008

so since we decided to utilize our blog as a, well… blog, i have a bit of blogtastic info for you all!- i imagine most of you are sitting at your desk jobs right now- it’s friday around 3pm, and you’re itching to get away from your desk and out into the sun. hopefully some of you have managed to sneak away early!

just a reminder that if you’re looking for something to do tonight during your First Friday ventures, there is an opening at Compound Warehaus , which is a brand new gallery space at 319 N. 11th St in the China Town area (near 11th and Vine St… go to the link for additional details). Our wonderful friend Erin is co-wing person of this establishment, so please head out and support! this kick-off opening will feature the work of various artists- each piece involves some form of representation of or homage to the philly skyline, and all pieces are affordably priced at $100 or less! can’t beat it!

so i bet you’re wondering what music and swimming have to do with any of this. well once upon a time about 8 or 9 years ago ( i can’t remember exactly when) i became involved in the live original music scene here in our beautiful city of brotherly love, and i’ve been “collecting” bands ever since. some people collect records, some collect stamps, buttons, rare coins. i collect bands. some of  you may or may not know this about me- i’ve never really gone off on this tangent to the fullest extent, but now that this is our “Super Blog”….                                                                               So long story short, one of the bands which i currently play in is playing this wonderfully spectacular POOL PARTY (!!!) this weekend- Saturday Aug 2 to be exact, and it is open to the public.

my dear friends Lisa and Rodney (of Surefire Broadcast fame) host the best pool parties around (maybe even the ONLY pool parties worth trekking out to Hammonton, NJ for!) this is the 4th annual Rock & Roll pool party, and i am very honored to say this will be the 3rd consecutive one i am performing at- this year with Ports of Call! (last year i performed with Grammar Debate!, and the year before that, Rarebirds. and yes, i currently play in all three of these bands, as well as Roomtone on occasion :-)

so, this year  all the fun starts at 2:30pm and all the info you could ever need to know may be found right here…..

a $10 donation is requested, but that is a complete steal for all you can swim/eat/quench your thirst with!

many good bands are on the bill this year- even one from Sweden!

music starts at 3, and Ports of Call plays first, so bring your suit and towel and get there early while the sun is shining. this is really possibly one of the funnest things you may do all summer- i am giddy as a school girl just thinking about it!

here are more details in a visually stimulating flyer:

see you guys soon, and to those of you who will choose to stay in the hot hot muggy city- try to stay cool!
