A Miniature Ocean: New Work by Darla Jackson

June 10th, 2009

darla postcard front  darla postcard back

Everyone knows about the birds and the bees, but have you ever heard the one about the birds, the bees, and the baby rabbits who live under the ocean, breathing through straws until a momma rabbit comes to pick them up with the little boat on her head? Yeah, us neither…at least not yet anyway. But starting on June 27th you can come on over to Mew Gallery to check out a miniature ocean, an exhibition of new work by Darla Jackson.

Jackson, known for creating strange animal sculptures, uses animals and symbolism to tell bizarre tales. Yet as far out as some of these stories may seem, they’re all rooted in expressing the duality of human emotion.

a miniature ocean was conceived by Jackson shortly after she had found out that she had conceived…a baby. After having read scary book after scary book on the birthing process, she came across a much less scary book that compared her belly to “a miniature ocean”.  Jackson ran with the idea, putting her own spin on it, of course.

The exhibition opens on June 27th and runs through July 30th.

A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, June 27th at 5pm atMew Gallery 906 Christian Street, Philadelphia, PA.

Please visit www.darlajacksonsculpture.com for more information.

Exhibits and Events and Workshops, OH MY!

April 7th, 2009

hello everyone,

just wanted keep you all updated on all of the going-ons here at MEW.

Stop in and check out our current exhibit: “Lessons Learned: New Artwork About Old Things” by Lea D. Sorrentino.

the exhibit runs thru May 7, so don’t miss it! in addition to all of the really great (and AFFORDABLE!) artwork on the walls, Lea has also constructed a really awesome 6ft. tall cut paper tree and a silhouette clothesline strung across the gallery.

I create art to understand the development of human perception and emotion. I use my artwork to tell stories, and use those stories as a vessel to create emotional connections with people. Many of the themes I use in my work are personal experiences that I feel are emotionally charged, but are universally related to. I am trying to guide my viewer into seeing that struggle is not defined by the cause, but by the emotion that cause leaves behind. I also use my artwork to explore the connections between a person’s class and their behavior.
Visually I try to make my work approachable. I use bright colors and simple drawings to express difficult experiences of my life. I want the viewer to assume that what they are about to see is secure and familiar, but in reality deals with adult subjects that can be awkward or uncomfortable. I use a “comic” style to make my artwork feel youthful and inviting, which helps push the juxtaposition of the content. I also try to use text not just to inform the viewer or push the story, but to guide them through a path around the piece.
My current work specifically deals with my experience becoming the person I am today. When you are younger you have the same emotions that you currently experience daily, but you do not have the knowledge to understand those emotions. With this work I am trying to make a time line of human growth and development. I want my artwork to be used as a way to discuss the aspects of emotion and struggle that are not individual, and are shared by all humans.

I Like to Eat Garbage

April 1st, 2009

So this dude came into the store the other day and told me he has a webshow about grease trucks. If you are like me and enjoy eating unadulterated cheese- coated garbage then you will enjoy this show very much: http://www.vendr.tv/

Watch it and drool. Then give up on your dumb vegan, organic, whole grain cardboard diet. Philadelphia wasn’t voted the fattest and ugliest city for nothing, people.

Get with the program.
